Follow these steps to help keep damage to a minimum:

  • If you can, remove some excess water with a mop, or a shop-vac. DO NOT use a regular household vacuum.
  • Any wet area rugs or floor coverings can be taken outside.
  • Make sure the bottoms of your curtains or draperies are not touching any water on the floor. Lift them up and loop them over the curtain rod.
  • Wipe any water off of your furniture and take off any wet cushions and prop them up so they can dry evenly. Place aluminum foil under furniture legs to prevent them from absorbing any water.
  • Grab any paintings or photographs and take them to a dry, safe location.
  • If any books on shelves have gotten wet, do not remove them individually, instead pack them tightly to prevent the pages from warping. We have a specialized drying process.
  • Open up closet doors, drawers, cabinets etc. to enhance air flow and drying.

  • DO NOT walk into a room with standing water. Always make sure the electricity is turned off first.
  • DO NOT try to remove the water with a regular household vacuum.
  • DO NOT attempt to remove your wall-to-wall carpeting, we’ll take care of this if necessary when we arrive.
  • DO NOT use any electrical appliances while on any wet surfaces.
  • DO NOT disturb any visible mold. We have the equipment to do so safely.

Flood water is considered Category 3 Blackwater. “Blackwater” is dangerous to both your health and your property. The water that gets in your home from flooding could contain all kinds of pathogens and contaminants. Sewage, garbage, and water from waste lines can all get mixed into this rising water that gets into your home.

Special care must go into the flood damage restoration process. These disasters are typically covered by insurance so you’re best off calling for professional help.

We have the people and equipment necessary to pump out and remove any water 24/7 for repair and restoration.

  • Dark spots in walls or ceiling. Dark spots could be water-soaked into your wall or ceiling. Or they could be mold.
  • Musty or mildew smell. A humid, musty smell from a damp environment could mean there is water somewhere causing damage to your property.
  • Bubbling paint or soft spots. If your drywall feels soft or mushy, this may indicate a water issue. This may also be accompanied by bubbling paint.
  • Sounds of water running. If you hear water running but don’t know where it’s coming from, this could be a leak somewhere.
  • Visible mold. Mold grows in damp areas, so if you see mold growth, there may be a water related issue also present.
  • Warped or bowed hardwood floors. When your hardwood floors absorb water, they expand slightly and this causes them to get warped and bow up.

Water damage can happen for many different reasons. Some of the most common causes:

  • Plumbing leaks – water heaters, appliances, backed-up sewer lines.
  • Broken / Frozen pipes
  • A clogged and/or overflowing toilet
  • Moisture behind walls
  • Roof leaks
  • Storms / Flooding
  • Fire related incidents
  • Cracks in your foundation
  • Failing sump pump in basement
  • Blocked or clogged drains
  • Condensation from Air Conditioners

Fire Damage repair & Restoration

Fires are one of the most dangerous disasters as they cause extensive damage to a home or building while threatening the health and safety of you and your family.  The situation can still be dangerous after the fire is extinguished because smoke, soot, and the water used to put it out will continue to spread damage. This can then become permanent if the restoration does not begin soon enough.

It is best to call for smoke damage restoration services as soon as the fire is extinguished to prevent permanent damage. This is because certain synthetic materials release chemical emissions and corrosive byproducts when burned that may linger after the fire; furthermore, the soot will settle throughout the building, causing etching to select surfaces. To prevent this, Columbia Property Maintenance will effectively remove soot damage from the following delicate household surfaces using the appropriate chemical combinations:

  • Chrome, brass, aluminum
  • Marble, tile, porcelain
  • Carpeting and upholstery

  1. Emergency Pre-Cleaning
  2. Content Cleaning

  5. Deodorization

  • Immediately contact us for fire damage restoration services as the damage can quickly become permanent.
  • If the outside temperature is above 60 degrees, open the door and windows to air out your home.
  • You can prevent permanent damage to Formica, chrome, porcelain, and aluminum by cleaning these surfaces.
  • Change the air filter on furnaces that use forced hot air.
  • Tape damp cheesecloths over the return and supply registers to help filter soot from the air.
  • Throw away any open food packages.
  • If the power is out, thoroughly clean out your refrigerator.
  • Save smoke damaged clothing for our restoration dry cleaning services.

  • DO NOT touch damaged walls, upholstery, or woodwork with your hands because the oil in your hand can penetrate these surfaces and cause further damage.
  • DO NOT wash soot-damaged walls yourself because improper cleaning methods will compound the problem.
  • DO NOT clean carpeting or upholstery, this should be done by professionals.
  • DO NOT use electrical appliances until they have been deemed safe to use.
  • DO NOT use ceiling fixtures hanging on a wet ceiling.
